a glorious way with words

Chaos In Camelot was the book I chose to take on my summer holiday in 2018 - and what a great decision that was!

But you don't need sunshine and ice cream to enjoy this time-travelling, comic fantasy novel. It's an equally great choice to curl up with as autumn turns to winter and you want to escape into another world.

At its centre is our modern-day, anti-hero Frank (a nasty piece of work by anyone's standards) who finds himself jettisoned back in time to the world of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table where he is tasked with breaking up the affair between Queen Guinevere and Sir Lancelot.

The story unfurls at a cracking pace as Frank encounters a King Arthur who only wants to write poetry, the world's most annoying Jester, and a Merlin who is more sleazy conman than genius wizard. Prepare to have your preconceptions of the days of chivalry turned on their head as Frank is reluctantly reconciled with his most unwanted challenge.

Author Jon Carvell has a glorious way with words and if you are a fan of Terry Pratchett's books and Monty Python and the Holy Grail I think you will love the style of this book and the story it tells. But even if you are not - or if those works have passed you by - give it a try if you are looking for a fun, page-turner of a book that parodies one of our greatest legends and makes you giggle out loud.
